Cybersecurity works the same way. We rely on sophisticated technology to protect our digital lives, but the most common threats – phishing, account takeovers, and malware – exploit simple mistakes. The fundamentals are essential. 

How to Keep the Digital Door Closed 

• Use Strong Passphrases and a Password Manager Software 
  • A secure passphrase is long, memorable, and unique to each account. Avoid reusing passwords across platforms. A password manager can generate and store strong credentials, so you don’t have to remember them all. 
• Turn On Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).  
  • MFA adds an extra layer of security by requiring more than one method to verify your identity, such as a password plus a code sent to your phone or generated by an app. Even if your password is compromised, MFA makes it significantly harder for attackers to gain access. 
• Turn On Automatic Software Updates on Your Devices 
  • Updates often include critical security patches that fix known vulnerabilities. Enabling automatic updates ensures your devices, apps, and browsers stay protected without relying on manual reminders. 
• Stay Alert to Phishing Attempts
  • Phishing emails and texts often impersonate trusted sources and creates urgency to trick you into clicking malicious links or sharing sensitive information. Hover over links before clicking, verify the email address of the sender, and never share credentials via email or text. When in doubt, contact the sender through a trusted channel, such as a phone call, instead of replying directly. 
• Research An App Before Downloading It
  • Before installing anything new, check the app’s reputation, read user reviews, and review its privacy and security features. If in doubt, don’t proceed.
